4th Year Dissertation & Project

The Swans is a narrative driven video game based on the famous Irish mythology tale 'The Children of Lír.'

A rough synopsis of the story is that King Lir is mourning the loss of his wife Eva after she gave birth to twins, 4 children are now left motherless until Lir decides to marry Aoife who is Eva’s sister. It turns out that Aoife becomes very jealous that Lir does not show the same love to her as he does to his children and begins to make a plan to get rid of them. Aoife then takes the children for a ‘walk’ down to a lake and turns the 4 children into swans. The 4 children are cursed to move around various locations of Ireland for 300 years.

From a few years back I always wanted to base a game around an irish mythology tale as I have always had an interest in Irish mythology, it’s something that often inspires me. I vividly remember being recited The Children of Lir in primary school and from family members, for me that’s what mythology is about. Passing down tales to the younger generation and keeping them alive. , I wanted to see if I could interpret the story myself and bring it to a new medium (video games).

The game is currently not finished and I plan to work on it in my spare time.
